‘I Make Myself A Rock to Experience Geopolitical Issues’

2012

Stepping into ‘0395A. ĐC’, the most theatrical piece in the exhibition, we are confronted with objects and artworks that allude to the uncertainty of life at sea: two large pieces of wood forming a triangular shape resembling the head of a boat washed ashore, a fishing net clinging onto a cabinet, half-written opened notebooks, some cassette tapes, a red S-shaped hook, a charcoal stove, the series 0395A.ĐC smearing across the wood., and bones-bones-bones-bones everywhere. On the surface of the wood we see a projected video of a woman dressed in a red traditional áo dài, bent down in front of the ocean in a foetal position, stubbornly remaining as the waves hit her (titled ‘I Make Myself A Rock to Experience Geopolitical Issues’); and behind it, a video of a woman wearing the same áo dài, drinking water again and again until it drives her to sickness (titled ‘I Drink My Country’). These two videos are documentation of Ly Hoàng Ly’s on-going performances, where the artist tests her own physical and mental endurance by giving herself up to natural elements, as if to reflect the journey one goes through in situations of hopelessness and restlessness. Look carefully, and on one of the walls we will find a still image of the portrait of an aged man, underneath which the subtitle reads, “I had no choice but to cut the rope connected to that boat.” A line so disturbingly familiar. Could we have read it elsewhere in the exhibition?
